Craft Punk: Raw Edges

During 'Craft Punk', a design performance exhibition in Milan, the London based studio Raw Edges created a series of chairs called "Pleated Pleat". The furniture was made by folding and re-folding Tyvek, which was then filled with soft polyurethane foam (note the blue caps). The exhibit was produced by Design Miami. (photos via designboom)

Christien Meindertsma: Flax

This is one of the projects I've been waiting to hear about from Milan - thankfully Thomas Eyck updated their website first. Designer Christien Meindertsma, (creator of Flocks) has introduced a beautiful new series titled, 'Flax'. By studying the history of the 16th century Dutch cordage industry, Meindertsma collected flax, spun the filaments into yarn/strands and then crafted several objects, including an extension cord and ottoman (above). BCXSY: CHANGE!

Set to debut in Milan, BCXSY has created a new series of furniture and accessories called CHANGE! The collection, which is made from rubber coated foam, is designed to be durable and lightweight. The designers also took a different approach to the recent foam fad carving each piece by hand.

Niels and Sven

Nice concept from Dutch Studio Niels and Sven. Using a technique that casts cardboard forms into aluminum, the pair have made several items including seating and tableware. Though the products could be a little more creative, the idea has possibilities. (via pan-dan)

Drawn From Clay

Recent Eindhoven graduates Lonny van Ryswyck and Nadine Sterk embarked on a science project/craft exploration by studying the soils/clays of the Noordoostpolder region in the Netherlands. The results of their findings are part of the latest exhibit at Gallery Libby Sellers, 'Drawn From Clay - Noordoostpolder', which showcases the research and tableware pieces made by the duo.
