Daisuke Hiraiwa

Daisuke Hiraiwa exhibited three of his lights as part of the Contemporary British Design at ICFF. The larger of the toothpick versions, called 'Stamen', was made with app. 12,500 toothpicks.

Daniel Franzen

Nice table made from sliced boards of turned pine by Daniel Franzen. He also recently teamed up with Marie-Louise Gustafsson to create the 'Come Rain or Come Shine lighting series. (via Malo)

Moooi: Brave New World

Love the 'Brave New World' lamp by Fresh West for Moooi. Made up of pegged and notched wood, reminiscent of old Far Eastern bamboo scaffolding.

Katrina Nuutinen

Katrina Nuutinen, a student at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, designed the glass 'Hely' lamp to look like "jewels for the home".

TAF Arkitektkontor

Beautiful lighting by Mattias Ståhlbom of TAF Arkitektkontor. 'Bottle' can be used as a pendant or tabletop fixture and is available in both glass and acrylic.

Tom Dixon

New glass pendants and 'Spot' tables (enamel coated cast iron) from Tom Dixon.

James Patmore

James Patmore, a young British designer, came up with a clever idea for the man who wants to hide his grooming supplies; the 'Armadillo' dresser has wooden sliding panels which reveal small compartments. Also notable is his 'NaCl' light...molecular structures win my heart every time.

5.5 Designers for Coincasa

New table design from 5.5 designers for Coincasa. This modular piece has an interchangeable third leg - users can choose from a book stand, bird cage or light. (via designboom)

Come Up tp My Room: Room 204

This installation at Come Up to My Room was designed by Andrew Ooi and Eric Mathew. The 'Origami' light created by Ooi is made from Japanese paper.

Come Up to My Room 2009

'Come Up to My Room', an annual exhibit at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, took place from February 5th-8th. Various designers are invited to transform a space within the hotel and are given free reign to present whatever they please. Above are Kwangho Lee's beautiful handmade lamps, which were part of the ballroom installation. More photos of the exhibit to come.

Misewell

Spotted the work of American designers Misewell on notcot.org and was intrigued. Their 'Lockwood' chair and 'Conrad' tables have a nice combination of warm woods and metal. The metal happens to be steel, which makes me wonder how heavy these pieces are. Looks like they will be at ICFF this year, so we'll find out!

Mathias Hahn

Nice lighting by Mathias Hahn - these 'Lanterns' stretch between the ceiling and the floor, allowing the user to adjust the height.

Georg Baldele

Nice lighting by British designer Georg Baldele. His 'Buona Sera’ pendants are hand made with Nomex fire-resistant paper.

Raphael Charles

Two projects by Belgian designer Raphael Charles, whose recycled film vases were spotted at ICFF. His '33T' project is seat/storage container, while 'Stars' is a reconfigurable lighting fixture that gives the impression of a constellation.

Billy May

Another reason I wish I had a house. These 'Torn' lights by designer Billy May, allow the user to build the fixtures right into the wall.

Bastoni by Jaime Hayon

New lighting by Jaime Hayon for Metalarte. Combining humor with functionality, Hayon designed the Bastoni collection so that it could be comfortably dragged around the house for reading.

Cite

While I was New York for Design Week, I had a chance to stop by the SoHo furniture and accessories showroom Cite. Among the highlights were: the 'Uphill' lamp by Frederik Roije; ceramic rats by Robert Renzi and my favorite pixelated ceramic/glass vases by Industreal.

Dan Sjogren and Chris Armijo

Denver designers Dan Sjogren and Chris Armijo had an opening last night to showcase their new furniture and lighting collections. Sjogren exhibited a simple, sophisticated dining set made from birch ply, which was created using CNC machinery. Armijo's work included 'Buoy' (constructed from 256 whiffle balls), 'Linkage' (14,000 paper clips), 'Catepillar' (70 plastic clothes hangers) along with an untitled installation made from 3,000 zip ties.

Wry & Ginger: Part 1

One of the better shows I visited during New York Design Week was Wry & Ginger at Design Within Reach. This exhibit of Canadian-based designers had a nice mix of work; from the handcrafted to the commercial and from small scale souvenirs to larger pieces of furniture. Thout exhibited their Spool and Scribble lights, two diverging interpretations of a lamp shade made from the same electrical cord. My favorite piece was undoubtedly the Last Waltz, by the Brothers Dressler. The twin brother designers create one-off and limited editions pieces made from salvaged shoe lasts. Castor presented a hand carved limestone stool made to resemble a beaver-gnawed stump.
