The pair used light sensitive material to transform white ceramic vases into Prussian blue pieces. Kwangho Lee recently took part in 'Craft Punk', an exhibition in Milan where designers made furniture and accessories on-site with recycled materials from Fendi's manufacturing process. Lee made chairs out of re-purposed garden hoses and electrical wire. (photos from designboom)
During 'Craft Punk', a design performance exhibition in Milan, the London based studio Raw Edges created a series of chairs called "Pleated Pleat". The furniture was made by folding and re-folding Tyvek, which was then filled with soft polyurethane foam (note the blue caps). The exhibit was produced by Design Miami. (photos via designboom)

Recent Eindhoven graduates Lonny van Ryswyck and Nadine Sterk embarked on a science project/craft exploration by studying the soils/clays of the Noordoostpolder region in the Netherlands. The results of their findings are part of the latest exhibit at Gallery Libby Sellers, 'Drawn From Clay - Noordoostpolder', which showcases the research and tableware pieces made by the duo.
This installation at Come Up to My Room was designed by Andrew Ooi and Eric Mathew. The 'Origami' light created by Ooi is made from Japanese paper.
'Come Up to My Room', an annual exhibit at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, took place from February 5th-8th. Various designers are invited to transform a space within the hotel and are given free reign to present whatever they please. Above are Kwangho Lee's beautiful handmade lamps, which were part of the ballroom installation. More photos of the exhibit to come.
More from the Wry & Ginger show at Design Within Reach in New York. The mouth blown glass bulbs (called CCFL's - cold cathode fluorescent lamps) by Covello Reesor were impressive, especially since they last longer than regular CFL's. The exhibit also included the simple 'Maun Windsor' chair from Patty Johnson, 'Love is Blind' vase by Jessica Lertvilai and 'Mountie Stool' by Samare.
One of the better shows I visited during New York Design Week was Wry & Ginger at Design Within Reach. This exhibit of Canadian-based designers had a nice mix of work; from the handcrafted to the commercial and from small scale souvenirs to larger pieces of furniture. Thout exhibited their Spool and Scribble lights, two diverging interpretations of a lamp shade made from the same electrical cord. My favorite piece was undoubtedly the Last Waltz, by the Brothers Dressler. The twin brother designers create one-off and limited editions pieces made from salvaged shoe lasts. Castor presented a hand carved limestone stool made to resemble a beaver-gnawed stump.

Students from the Design Academy Eindhoven will be taking part in an exhibition called Still during this year's Milan Furniture Fair. This piece, called 'Waterevaporation', is by Hanneke Guerts vanKessel. I love futuristic-looking plant orbs!

Though ICFF always has a few interesting pieces, the Milan Furniture Fair and it's related shows are really where it's at. This year seems to be no exception as the initial sneak peek photos from Milan have begun to drift out. Over the next few days I'll highlight the best of what I can find coming in from the various exhibitions.
OK, I'm ready to stop my griping about the lack of good coat hook designs out there. I've finally seen some good ones - including these from Nick Leigh, which Angela spotted at the designboom mart in Tokyo. Available in multiple colors and single, 3 and 5 hook designs.
22designstudio's 'Concrete Rings' were a big hit at the designboom mart in Tokyo this year. Made from stainless steel and cement, the rings come in a variety of forms and will soon be available exclusively through the designboom shop.

My buddy and fellow Denverite, Angela from INV/ALT design, recently came back from a journey to Japan where she exhibited at designboom mart Tokyo.
