Reverse

As part of a senior thesis project, Spanish students Alon Tal and Fabio Alvarez teamed up with Zicla, a company specializing in recycled materials, to create 'Reverse' - an emergency cushion made from re-purposed car foam. (via Product Design Project)

Swoc

Swoc is a modular storage system built with fabric blocks. Designed by the German firm ett la benn. Too bad none of their shots show the system with stuff inside -I'm curious to see how it holds up.

Flocks by Christien Meindertsma

Dutch designer Christien Meindertsma's Flocks project brings new meaning to the phrase product awareness. Every mitten, scarf and sweater created comes from a single source of wool/fur. The animal's breed, age, location and photo are included with every hand knit item.

Longoland

Taking a quick break from the New York Design Week coverage to share these wonderful pieces by Joshua Ben Longo. His 'Monster Skin' rug and chair are made from brushed woven wool and cashmere.

Oz by Cate&Nelson

Cate&Nelson's 'Oz' chair is an interesting take on the classic lounger. The user can flip between pieces of felt to change up the color and mood. I am curious about the comfort factor though - I guess we'll find out at ICFF where 'Oz' will be on display as part of the ICFF Studio competition.

Top Floor

Rugs don't come up too often on designklub...probably because they're not that interesting. However, 'Esquire' by Esti Barnes for Top Floor caught my eye - I can't quite tell if the crinkle effect is a trick of shading or if the rug is actually textured - I hope the latter is the case.

Gomitolo Clock

Found this sneak peek of Diamantini & Domeniconi's 'Gomitolo' clock for the 2008 Salone del Mobile at yatzer. A hand knit cotton clock is a sight to behold.

Jenny Nordberg: Curtis

Jenny Nordberg, the Swedish designer who brought us the amazing 'King of the Road' bike, showed some of her latest work at this year's Designers Block in Milan. Jenny's strong dislike for curtains was the inspiration behind her 'Curtis' series. By embracing the forms she so vehemently opposed, the fabric draped table and light are given new life.

Sparks: Magnetosphere Quilt

The intersection of science and design has always been fascinating to me, and I'm not talking leaf motifs on pillows - I mean true mega-nerd, ultra-geek combinations. Like this fellow from San Fransisco who creates amazingly beautiful images and video through processing. He gave an image he created of the magnetosphere (top) to his very talented mom who translated into quilt form (bottom).

Not only are the colors and design great, but the craftsmanship is amazing too. Not being able to find a wide enough fabric for the backing she used one inch squares for the entire project. She should team up with Denyse Schmidt!

If you like nerdy science imagery like me (after all I named my kickball team Science for the People), you should check out the rest of Robert's site, especially the butterfly project.

Caba by Kwangho Lee

'Caba' is a Korean word meaning to cover or decorate a particular surface. Designer Kwangho Lee used that word as inspiration in creating his modular laser-cut felt system. The individual pieces are small snowflake motifs, which can be linked together to create new decorative textile surfaces.

ICFF Day 3: Textiles

New pattern from Amenity.

I am always a huge fan of the wild patterns and colors from Missoni Home.

I finally got to meet Shelly from k studio and see their new designs. All of the embroidered pillows were great, but the big round faces were the best!

Sparks: Reiko Sudo

To call Reiko Sudo a mastermind of textiles would probably be an understatement. The Japanese designer is world-renowned for her her innovative, visionary fabrics - although I hadn't even heard of her until a few years ago. Now, whenever I'm feeling low on creativity I can look to her work and feel inspired.

Sudo is fearless when it comes to experimentation - she folds her fabric, dissolves it, and in the image above, burns it. She created the cloth by weaving very thin strands of stainless steel together and then holding it over an open flame.

My favorites though, are the textiles from her 'Scrapyard' series. In this project she left nails, barbed wire and iron plates (shown above) out in the elements to rust. Some people fight rust, others embrace it. MoMa has a nice video Reiko Sudo creating the pieces in her 'Scrapyard' series here.

Denyse Schmidt Podcast

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Denyse Schmidt while she was in Denver setting-up for her new exhibition at the P Design Gallery. Denyse created six couture quilts specifically for this show, which runs at the P Design Gallery from March 17 - May 12. The day before the opening I recorded Denyse, Paul Hardt (co-owner of P Design Gallery) and myself in designklub's first ever podcast. There is a slide show of images from the exhibition to accompany the piece - many are close-up shots, revealing the beautiful detail in her work. I'll also create a Flickr album of all the images over the weekend.

I hope you enjoy the podcast, I already have plans for several more. (Now that I have spent countless hours in garageband forums and testing my mic, I might as well keep going). Thanks again to Paul and Denyse, it was great talking with both of you!

* Update - The podcast is now available on iTunes! Woohoo iTunes.

Dish It Out

Saw these pretty dishcloths by Atelier LZC in the April issue of Dwell. The bright colors make me think of spring...available for $16 at Rose & Radish.
