Craft Punk: Studio Glithero

Studio Glithero, a London based collective founded by Sarah van Gameren (one of my favorite young designers) and Tim Simpson, were among the participants in Fendi's 'Craft Punk' exhibition. The pair used light sensitive material to transform white ceramic vases into Prussian blue pieces. Above is Studio Glithero at the Craft Punk exhibit and below is an example of their work in plate form. (photos from designboom)

Niels and Sven

Nice concept from Dutch Studio Niels and Sven. Using a technique that casts cardboard forms into aluminum, the pair have made several items including seating and tableware. Though the products could be a little more creative, the idea has possibilities. (via pan-dan)

KithKin Presents...

Ian from KithKin was kind enough to send me some preview photos of British designer Tamsin Van Essen's new work. 'Contamination' is a series of ceramic cups whose appearance portrays the growth and multiplication of bacterial colonies such as cholera and e-coli. Van Essen's work will be part of an exhibition titled KithKin Presents, which will run during London Design Week in September. Thanks Ian!

Tocornal Design

'Beecups' by Santiago-based Tocornal Design are a study in people's attachment to objects. A familiar form combined with an unfamiliar material challenges the relationship and function one has with the design.

Neri & Hu

It seems like everywhere I look I've been reading about Chinese designers Neri & Hu. Their collection, which includes both furniture and accessories, debuted at 100% Design Shanghai in July. Highlights from their portfolio includes: 'Boli Double Wall Glass', which is made to resemble, "a conventional tea glass form...within the confines of the modern glass shape", '1/3 Salt & Peppers' - 3 shakers that allow for the inclusion of white pepper, a spice commonly used in China and the 'Extrude Wood Stool Collection' - inspired by the shape of bamboo and lotus roots.

Frame Plates by d-Vision

I like the idea of framing food - not only for the presentation possibilities, but also because the firm edges help keep things under control. Designed by the Israeli group d-Vision.

Anna Olivia Kristiansen

Anna Olivia Kristiansen is a ceramicist whose work was recently shown as part of the Danish Crafts, Hand On! exhibit at ICFF. Her series of plates called 'The Danish Pig' provide a step-by-step illustration of how pork is made. With straightforward graphics, she follows the pig from birth to bacon. Kristiansen's motivation is simple, "If the consumer wants to eat the pig, they should be able to stomach the background story."
