In light of my earlier post, I had to share these wonderful rings featured on sub-studio today. Designer Tom Ferrero creates his Journal rings by encasing found objects in resin. The silver is then marked with the exact location where the object was discovered. I love the idea of designers sharing their sources, both here and with the Flocks project below - it makes the products so much more intriguing.
22designstudio's 'Concrete Rings' were a big hit at the designboom mart in Tokyo this year. Made from stainless steel and cement, the rings come in a variety of forms and will soon be available exclusively through the designboom shop.
I spotted Karla Schabert's amazing line of jewelry while visiting the Cooper Hewitt in NY. Her pieces are delicately crafted by crocheting fine cotton over glass beads. So beautiful.
Growing up along the New England coast, I spent a lot of my time on the beach collecting colorful bits of sea glass. On a very lucky day, I would find a worn down piece of porcelain and wonder where that little treasure had floated in from. 
Kleinoden means 'little treasures' in Dutch, which describes the work of Gesine Hackenberg perfectly. Her brooches remind me of the tiny tins a baker may use to cook up a mini-cake or bon-bon. As if that wasn't charming in and of itself, Gesine uses Japanese Urushi lacquer in her work, which gives each piece a distinct retro twist. (via the wonderful dutch blog grijs)
It's strange that I don't have pierced ears, yet I am continually drawn to earrings. I have gone on many a trip where I find amazing earrings made from exotic shells or some other fantastic material, only to find myself wishing I could use them. Yeah, strange. Anyway, for those of you who can actually wear earrings, I think you'll like BtheNV. Each piece is uniquely crafted from recycled magazines and sterling silver by two sisters in Rhode Island. You can be sure that if I wore earrings, I would definitely be getting a pair of these little beauties.
Sometimes, a girl likes to have options. Jewelry maker Heidi Butler is providing just that with her clever double-duty design, 'Love is Enough'. Made from reclaimed wood, it can be worn as a ring, or as a brooch, depending on your fancy. Choices galore: fancy that.
In Victorian times people would keep lockets of hair belonging to their lost loves. Today, we have artist Melanie Bilenker, who creates an amazing line jewelry following in this bygone tradition. Images of simple moments are captured in resin and drawn with delicate detail using strands of the artist's own hair. Her line includes rings, pendants, and my favorite, the brooches above. Joining the ranks of Ana Hagopian in Barcelona's jewelry scene is Walter Chen. To say Chen is a wizard with paper may be an understatement. I can't even make a decent paper airplane and here he is crafting amazing pieces of jewelry (reversible jewelry). I found both Ana and Walter through the website Trace Paper - a paper fanatic's dream store.
Paper is used for notecards and drawing, but it can be much more exciting when it becomes vases, jewelry and wallcoverings. For the next few days I am going to post on some wonderful paper projects I have been noticing.
