No Problem is a Danish design studio whose portfolio includes some simple and smart projects. Mule is defined as "plant furniture" - a place to hang and display your pots without blocking sunlight on the windowsill. Moroso and Kim Beck

Seeing the Moroso showroom was one of the highlights of New York Design Week. Patrizia Moroso found Kim Beck's book, "A Field Guide to Weeds," and loved the graphic imagery. She invited the artist to create an installation to go along with Moroso's outdoor furniture collection. A forest of acrylic trees and vinyl vines covered everything - I love Patrizia's vision, stunning as always.

Another nice exhibit among the student booths was RISD's Immaterialize. The pieces focused on materials' abilities vs. their typical applications. Among the highlights were Elisa Werbler's Pour cups, Ruth Fore's Crochet Crochet chair, Ian Horowitz's Loofah Ankle Boot and Debra Folz's 100% Wax table.

Pratt's 'Design for a Dollar' exhibition asked its students to create pieces made from a dollar of materials. Above are scissors made from discarded saw blades by Brian Persico, an oiled and heat pressed paper bag bag by Rebecca Marchall and pendants made from borax soaked pipe cleaners by Jennie Maneri.

I was really excited to see that Brklyn Designs had a booth at this year's fair. The show, which highlights local NY designers, usually takes place the week before ICFF - thus eliminating my chance of seeing it. The first table is by Umproject, while the bottom two pieces 'Metal Stoolen' and 'Stitched Table' are by Uhuru.

During ICFF, I spent most of my time scouring the off-site exhibitions for MoCo Loco. Over the next few weeks you can read many, many posts over there. However, I did make it to the Javitts Center for a few hours and came across some interesting new items.

Some of my favorite places to stop are the booths containing student work. Cranbrook's collection was called 'Innate Gestures', items that have been designed to interact with the the user through "natural sensory cues" thus enhancing the function and pleasure the object brings.

Above are the 'Newspaper Table' and 'Magazine Hanger' by Isaac Yu Chen, 'Symmetrican' by Saebyul Lim, and 'Triad' by Talha Khwaja. With the glut of "stuff" at ICFF, these objects were beautiful in their simplicity.

Stumbled across the work of Icelandic designer, Jón Björnsson, and really enjoyed his portfolio. Above are Björnsson's 'Table Rack', a magazine holder/side table combo and 'Flower Eruption', a series of vases he made by casting volcanic sand in paper molds. Mixed with resin, the sand dries and the paper is torn away - leaving a simple and crisp geometric form. He has some other nice projects made from folded paper (a chair and lights) that are worth checking out.

Craft Punk: Simon Hasan

Last post on 'Craft Punk', promise, but the exhibit looked amazing. Designer Simon Hasan utilized an ancient technique called cuir bouilli where leather is boiled and placed on wooden forms. After hardening, Hasan applies paint and creates watertight vessels that can be used as cups or vases. (photos from designboom)

Craft Punk: Studio Glithero

Studio Glithero, a London based collective founded by Sarah van Gameren (one of my favorite young designers) and Tim Simpson, were among the participants in Fendi's 'Craft Punk' exhibition. The pair used light sensitive material to transform white ceramic vases into Prussian blue pieces. During 'Craft Punk', a design performance exhibition in Milan, the London based studio Raw Edges created a series of chairs called "Pleated Pleat". This is one of the projects I've been waiting to hear about from Milan - thankfully Thomas Eyck updated their website first. Designer Christien Meindertsma, (creator of Flocks) has introduced a beautiful new series titled, 'Flax'. By studying the history of the 16th century Dutch cordage industry, Meindertsma collected flax, spun the filaments into yarn/strands and then crafted several objects, including an extension cord and ottoman (above). I recently got two nice emails from American designers Jeremy Kaplan (San Fransisco) and Claire D'Aoust (Detroit/Brooklyn) and wanted to share their work. Kaplan's creations include a series of poured concrete tables with inlaid bamboo (top). It's been so long since I've written I almost forgot my log-in info...sorry. Starting a museum has taken a lot more time than I thought, but so far Denver's first pop-up museum has been awesome. If you live in the area come on down this Saturday from 12-5 for a live community art event, "Pop-up Denver", as part of Denver Arts Week. Create a giant pop-up scene in the pop-up museum.

I'm going to try and get back on track with designklub next week, promise, with only two fingers crossed.

While browsing through the many photos of London Design Week, I came across this amazing project by the British design firm B3. They constructed an entire Cardboard Cafe out of 8,000 boxes. Everything from tables and walls to seating and cups were made from cardboard and edged with orange paint for a nice visual effect.

Denver Community Museum

I'm happy to announce a project I've been working on for quite some time, the Denver Community Museum (DCM). Carried out in the form of a pop-up gallery, the DCM will be a temporary arts institution located in downtown Denver, CO.

Contents for the museum's monthly, rotating exhibitions will be based entirely on community submissions. Every month a new 'Community Challenge' is issued and the results will be put on display.

Submissions are now being accepted for the first Community Challenge, titled "The Missing Map". The challenge is to: create a three-dimensional globe - of any size, using any material, sharing any narrative you desire. Submissions can be turned in 9.26 or 9.27 between 12-5 PM to the DCM at 1610 Little Raven St. Suite 120.

The DCM is free both to participate in and to visit. Submissions are welcome from people of all skill levels and ages, the only requirement is that you must be a resident of the City of Denver. The museum officially opens on Friday, October 3rd - future hours will be: Thursdays, 2 - 7 PM, Fridays and Saturdays, 12 - 5 PM and by appointment.

Manifest Hope

Another great project from Denver during the Democratic National Convention. Tres Birds, a Boulder-based architectural firm, created this 18' x 70' 'Manifest Hope' beacon from reclaimed bicycle wheels. The installation sits on top of the Andenken Gallery, which is putting on a top-notch art exhibition from Aug. 25-28th to coincide with the DNC.

Dialog: City

The Democratic National Convention has descended upon Denver and with it has come a variety of great arts and cultural events. Dialog: City is one such series of site-specific works put together by artists from around the globe. While some events (RISD's 'Partly Sunny' Design showcase) were less than impressive - others, such as Minsuk Cho's 'Air Forest' were a sight to behold.

With the help of a balloon manufacturing company, Cho designed 'Air Forest' to be a temporary floating public square. Occupying almost 10,000 square feet in Denver's City Park, the pneumatic pavilion will host everything from yoga classes to plays throughout the week.

Eco Brolly

Found the 'Eco-Brolly' while looking through some of the items that will be on display in London as part of Kithkin Presents. The pocket-size umbrella frame makes use of whatever materials are handy - everything from plastic bags to newspapers can be used for cover with this simple structure. Designed by Shiu Yuk Yuen.

Ian from KithKin was kind enough to send me some preview photos of British designer Tamsin Van Essen's new work. 'Contamination' is a series of ceramic cups whose appearance portrays the growth and multiplication of bacterial colonies such as cholera and e-coli. Van Essen's work will be part of an exhibition titled KithKin Presents, which will run during London Design Week in September. Thanks Ian!

I just discovered the work of Tokyo-based Torafu architects. The group has created some really innovative, wonderful interiors including this unique alteration of the Boolean Cafe at the University of Tokyo and these clever mdf wall cut-outs for the Claska Hotel. (via omami via yatzer)

'Assemblage' is a magnetic wall divider created by Shigeichiro Takeuchi (it reminds me of the board game Othello). The Japanese designer also made these cozy 'Triskelion' stacking stools.

Look at this great side table by the German design group ding3000. 'Muli', which reminds me of Victor Vetterlein's character-inspired work (minus the gold leaf), has two storage compartments and is made from oak.

Neri & Hu

It seems like everywhere I look I've been reading about Chinese designers Neri & Hu. Their collection, which includes both furniture and accessories, debuted at 100% Design Shanghai in July. Highlights from their portfolio includes: 'Boli Double Wall Glass', which is made to resemble, "a conventional tea glass form...within the confines of the modern glass shape", '1/3 Salt & Peppers' - 3 shakers that allow for the inclusion of white pepper, a spice commonly used in China and the 'Extrude Wood Stool Collection' - inspired by the shape of bamboo and lotus roots.
